How long does a scented candle last?
When choosing a scented candle, we often wonder how long it will burn. Burn time depends on its size, the quality of its raw materials and how the candle is used. The good news: a few simple habits are enough to make it last longer.
How many hours does a scented candle last?
A candle's lifespan depends first on its size. At OALI, our small candles offer at least 30 hours of burn time, while our large sizes can burn for up to 60 hours.
What affects burn time
The wax
A handmade plant-based wax candle burns more slowly and cleanly than an industrial paraffin candle, which naturally extends its use. It does, however, need a little more care, especially the first few times you light it.
The wick
A natural cotton wick, like the one in our candles, ensures an even, consistent burn without black smoke. An unsuitable or overly long wick, on the other hand, makes the wax burn too quickly.
How to make your scented candle last longer
1. Take care with the first burn
The first burn determines your candle's whole life. Let it burn long enough for the entire surface of the wax to melt to the edges of the pot: between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the size. If you blow it out too soon, a crater forms (the famous "tunnelling") and the candle will burn unevenly from then on.
2. Trim the wick before each use
A wick that is too long produces a flame that is too high, which uses up the wax faster and can give off smoke. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5 mm: the flame stays steady, the wax melts slowly and the pot stays clean.
3. Avoid draughts
A dancing flame burns badly. Place your candle away from windows, vents and busy passageways: the burn stays even and the fragrance spreads better.
4. Let it cool between uses
Plant-based wax holds heat longer than paraffin. Wait until it is completely cool before relighting it, to stop the wick sinking and the burn speeding up.
5. Protect it from dust
Once it is out, cover your candle: a lid or a small clean cloth is enough to protect the surface of the wax.
And after the last flame?
At OALI, nothing gets thrown away. Our handmade candles are hand-poured into carefully painted ceramic pots, with plant-based wax and fragrances from Grasse free from CMR substances and phthalates. When your candle is finished, clean the pot with hot soapy water: it becomes a little everyday container, or the perfect place to plant the seed paper label and watch wildflowers grow.
