Eco-friendly candles: how to recognise them and choose well

Lighting a candle is a simple gesture that instantly warms the atmosphere. But behind that little flame lie big differences. Many industrial candles are still made from petrochemicals, while others rely on natural, renewable materials. It is the latter that we call "eco-friendly candles". But what does that really mean, and how do you recognise them?

What is an eco-friendly candle?

An eco-friendly candle stands out first through its raw materials. The vast majority of industrial candles are made from paraffin, a petroleum derivative that is neither renewable nor neutral when burnt: it can release volatile organic compounds such as benzene or toluene. An eco-friendly candle, by contrast, uses a plant-based wax (soy, rapeseed, coconut…), made from renewable resources and kinder to indoor air.

But the wax is not the only thing to look at: the fragrance, the wick and the container matter just as much.

The 4 criteria for recognising an eco-friendly candle

1. 100% plant-based wax

Plant-based waxes burn more slowly, release fragrance better and produce less soot than paraffin. Be wary of vague claims such as "natural wax": a blend with paraffin may be hiding behind them.

2. A fragrance free from harmful substances

An eco-friendly candle must also be safe to scent your home. Choose fragrances made without CMR substances (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction) and without phthalates, such as fragrances from Grasse, which are subject to European regulations.

3. A natural wick

Often overlooked, the wick plays a key role. A cotton or untreated wood wick, free from lead and additives, ensures an even burn with no black smoke.

4. A container with a second life

A sturdy, reusable pot, in ceramic or thick glass, is always better than a disposable one. Once the candle is finished, it becomes a vase, a storage pot or a flowerpot.

Eco-friendly vs industrial candles: what changes

  • Composition: plant-based wax and controlled fragrances on one side; paraffin and synthetic fragrances, sometimes loaded with phthalates, on the other.
  • Burn: plant-based wax melts more slowly and evenly, with no black smoke.
  • Impact: renewable resources and small batches, rather than a mass-produced petroleum derivative.
  • Fragrance: a gradual release, without saturating the air.
  • Making: a handmade candle is poured by hand in small batches, and every piece is unique.

Why choose an eco-friendly candle?

The first reason is obvious: health. Lighting an eco-friendly candle means enjoying a fragrant atmosphere without filling your home with unwanted residues (we take stock in our comparison of waxes and their impact on health).

The second is environmental: a renewable wax and a reusable pot reduce the impact of this small everyday object.

Finally, there is a human dimension: supporting artisans who work with care, in small batches and close to home. An eco-friendly candle is not just a decorative object, it is a more conscious way of consuming.

How to choose well: the right reflexes

It all starts with reading the label. The composition should be clear: type of wax, origin of the fragrances, nature of the wick. If nothing is specified, be wary. In the face of greenwashing, serious brands are happy to explain their manufacturing choices and where their materials come from.

Also favour candles whose container can have a second life: a ceramic pot can be cleaned and reused for years.

Eco-friendly candles, the OALI way

At OALI, we have made clear choices:

  • 100% plant-based wax, with no paraffin or petrochemical derivatives;
  • fragrances from Grasse free from CMR substances and phthalates;
  • natural cotton wicks;
  • ceramic pots shaped and painted by hand, made to be reused;
  • a seed paper label to plant once the candle is finished, so wildflowers can bloom.

Choosing an eco-friendly candle means combining pleasure, health and respect for the environment: a simple way to turn an ordinary gesture into a small kindness for yourself and for the planet.
