What is the best handmade candle? 5 criteria to recognise it

We no longer choose a candle just for its scent. We also choose it for what it contains, what it releases when it burns and how it was made. But between "natural", "clean" and "handmade" promises, it is hard to find your way.

The short answer: the best handmade candle is poured in 100% plant-based wax, scented with fragrances free from CMR substances and phthalates, fitted with a cotton wick suited to its pot, presented in a reusable container, and made by hand in small batches by a maker who clearly says where and how.

Here is how to check each of these five criteria before you buy.

1. The wax: the heart of the candle

It all starts with the wax. Many industrial candles are poured in paraffin, a by-product of petroleum refining, or in blends whose composition is not stated.

A quality candle is poured in 100% plant-based wax: soy, rapeseed or coconut. This is what is most often called a natural candle. Plant-based wax burns slowly and cleanly, which extends the life of the candle.

What to check: the words "100% plant-based". "Made with plant-based wax" can hide a blend with paraffin.

At OALI, every candle is poured in 100% plant-based soy wax, with no paraffin.

2. The fragrance: well dosed and safe to breathe

A good candle should not just smell good: it should be safe to breathe. What matters is not that the fragrance is "natural", but that it is formulated for burning and free from substances of concern.

Beware of preconceptions: a 100% natural fragrance is not necessarily safer. Essential oils also contain allergens and cope badly with the heat of the flame. We explain this in detail in why some candles smell stronger than others.

What to check: where the fragrances come from, and the words "CMR-free" (substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction) and "phthalate-free".

At OALI, the fragrances come from Grasse, the world capital of perfumery, and are all guaranteed free from CMR substances and phthalates. Among the most popular: Vanilla & Honey, Orange Blossom and Sandalwood. And if you are wondering which scents people like most, here is the best-smelling scent in the world, according to science.

3. The wick: a small detail that matters a lot

The wick governs the whole burn. Too thin, and it drowns in the wax. Too thick, and it makes the candle smoke and blackens the pot.

What to check: a cotton wick suited to the diameter of the pot. A good wick gives a steady flame that melts the wax to the edge without black smoke.

All OALI candles have a cotton wick.

4. The container: beautiful, and made to last

A quality container is part of the experience, and it should not end up in the bin. Thick glass or ceramic pots are the most durable and easy to reuse: as a vase, a catch-all, a pencil pot or a cup. Here is how to clean a candle jar and reuse it.

At OALI, each candle is poured into a ceramic pot shaped and painted by hand by a cooperative of artisans: no two pots are quite the same. And the label is made of seed paper: once the candle is finished, you plant it and wildflowers grow.

5. Craftsmanship and transparency

A hand-poured candle made in small batches will never be perfectly smooth, and that is part of its charm. But "handmade" is not a protected term: the real difference is transparency.

What to check: does the brand say where its candles are poured, by whom and with what? A full composition and a precise place of manufacture are good signs.

OALI candles are hand-poured in our two workshops, in Huy in Belgium and in the Ardèche in France. Discover our story.

So, what is the best handmade candle?

The one that ticks all five criteria: a plant-based wax, a safe fragrance, a well-chosen wick, a container with a second life, and a maker with nothing to hide. After that, it is a matter of taste, and of scent.

At OALI, each candle is designed to scent your home without compromise and to live on after its flame. Discover our handmade candles, with free delivery to Belgium and France via Mondial Relay.

FAQ: handmade and natural candles

What is a natural candle?

Most often, a candle poured in 100% plant-based wax (soy, rapeseed, coconut) rather than paraffin. The term says nothing about the fragrance: always check that it is free from CMR substances and phthalates.

Is a handmade candle necessarily better?

No. "Handmade" is not a protected term. A quality handmade candle states its full composition, its place of manufacture and where its fragrances come from.

Is soy wax better than paraffin?

Soy wax is plant-based and renewable, whereas paraffin comes from petroleum. It burns more slowly and cleanly, which makes the candle last longer.

How long does a handmade candle last?

It depends on its size. At OALI, a 160 g candle burns for about 30 hours and a 320 g candle for about 60 hours.

How can you tell if a candle is toxic?

Look at the composition: 100% plant-based wax, fragrances free from CMR substances and phthalates, a cotton wick. A candle that gives off a lot of black smoke is poorly formulated or poorly looked after: remember to trim the wick to 5 mm before each use.
